Pistons On The Square

Simplicity Ruled The Day

The third Saturday of October is five days from now. It’s important to me because every third Saturday, of every month, classic cars from Austin and the surrounding area make the trip to the square in Georgetown, Texas. When the weather is good, cars start arriving before 8AM and by 9AM there are hundreds of cars and many more hundreds of observers wandering the square, chatting and taking pictures. Some of the cars and trucks are approaching 100 years old.

I have been going to these 3rd Saturday events for several years and have seen many of the cars and trucks before. But every time there will also be a car or truck that is new to the scene. Also, there are always new people, many walking their dog, or out for a stroll and an ice cream cone. It’s a great place to take pictures of people and cars.

Typically I put some pictures on Facebook, and often I will add some of those same pictures to this blog. Usually just the car or truck and not the people pictures. I don’t know why I hold back on the people pics. I love street photography and pledge to publish more people in the future.

The pictures today are from the event in September. The old Volkwagens typically cluster together on the south side of the court house. They are facing the mid 50’s classics, mostly Chevys, – both cars and trucks. The newer cars 60’s to the 90’s are usually on the east side of the court house. This is the sun side of the street at that time of day. The red cars seem to dominate this street. I don’ think there are any rules about who parks where, it just seems to work out that way.

Here are nine of the red cars from that Saturday. These were shot with my Leica Q3 43 and the red is great with that camera.

Here are a few other odds and ends from that Saturday. Again, taken with the Leica Q3 43.

I hope you enjoy the pictures. The next batch will be coming next week. If you are in central Texas, you should get out Saturday morning and make the trip to Georgetown. If you like old cars, this is the best show in town.

My work for pay was technical writing. But my passion is collecting classic photo gear and using film cameras and digital cameras to capture images that inspire and motivate me. I hope that you are inspired as well. This site is more about my places that my wife and I go on our travels. Or articles about cameras and lenses that I am currently using. Sometimes I will include links to images that I want to share with you.
