Black, White & Fuji GSW 690

I don’t want to overstate this or put too many words in this post. Just a few examples of TMax 400 from my recent shoot with the new to me Fuji GSW 690. The camera is probably close to 30 years old, originally designed to take pictures of tourist groups in Japan. The stunning characteristic of this camera is that it is designed to use 120 or 220 film and produce large, highly detailed negatives. If this were a digital camera the resolution would be in the neighborhood of 125MP.

A friend of mine owned this model and was looking to move from film into digital. He was willing to trade the camera to me for my Nikon D700 with the Nikkor 20-35 mm wideangle lens. I added some cash for an Olympus Zuiko 85mm OM 2.0 lens – a lens I had been looking to add to my Olympus film camera bag. It was a good deal for both of us.

Here is a picture of my Fuji “Texas Leica” – it’s a big camera, hence the nickname.

Here are some examples from the first roll of film that I shot with this camera. This is Kodak TMax 400, and provides a great contrasty and detailed image. I am very happy with the rangefinder focusing – it is spot-on perfect. I used a handheld meter as the camera is fully mechanical and does not have a meter or a battery.

Stay tuned – I am expecting my first color results later this week. I shot a roll of expired 220 Kodak Portra 400 and will upload some examples in a few days.

  1. first off, i love the detail on these shots. you really brought out the contextual beauty of the place with these pieces – articulating what makes these structures unique.

    i’ve been on the fence about getting back into medium format. at first, i was resigned to saving for the GF100S but then i discovered the actual sensor size discrepancy compared to film medium format and scratched that idea. now, i’ve found an outfit in florida that will process your film and i’m thinking that may be the push that i need to purchase one of these texas leicas or mamiya 6 or 7s

    either way, what these bodies produce is out of this world, the graduated tonal shifts if you capture curved surfaces, sky shots, portraits, etc. i’m happy with what i do 35mm wise but i feel that difference with medium format even on regular throwaway shots.
