Pistons On The Square

The third Saturday of October is five days from now. It’s important to me because every third Saturday, of every month, classic cars from Austin and the surrounding area make the trip to the square in Georgetown, Texas. When the weather is good, cars start arriving before 8AM and by 9AM there are hundreds ofContinue reading “Pistons On The Square”

Experiment with the Fuji X-H2

The Fujifilm X-H2 is a new camera to me and I am still learning the controls and functions. There are many differences from my previous camera the Fuji X-T4. This posting is about using the new camera with an old lens that I just acquired, the Konica Hexar AR 57 1.4, a manual focus lensContinue reading “Experiment with the Fuji X-H2”

What is an Escaramuza? Think Female Rodeo Queens of Mexico!

We spent the first 10 days of June In San Miguel de Allende – our home away from home. One of the highlights of the trip was going to the Escaramuza on Sunday, June 8. I really didn’t know what to expect – and, I was most pleasantly surprised. Here is a great article IContinue reading “What is an Escaramuza? Think Female Rodeo Queens of Mexico!”

Another Day, Another Lens

Two days ago I added pictures from the Fuji/Pentax lens testing. I have a second telephoto lens that I have not used before. This is the Fuji GFX 50S with the Pentax 135 3.5 attached. The package is very light and unassuming, and I think quite versatile for street and portrait photography. I am includingContinue reading “Another Day, Another Lens”

Fujifilm GFX & Adapted Pentax Lenses

I conducted a short photography experiment yesterday. I adapted two 60 year old lenses; one a 21 mm and the other a 200 mm M42 lens (designed for the Pentax Spotmatic). I shot a couple dozen pictures with my Fuji GFX 50S medium format camera. When you nail the focus, this combination of camera andContinue reading “Fujifilm GFX & Adapted Pentax Lenses”

Three 6 X 6-Shooters

I want to share some recent pictures I have taken with my 6 x 6 medium format film cameras. I have a Yashica Mat 124G (1974-75 timeframe), a Rolleiflex 2.8D (1956) and a Rolleicord Vb (1966). I’ve owned the Yashica Mat 124G the longest, but it is the most recently manufactured of the three cameras.Continue reading “Three 6 X 6-Shooters”

Shooting Square with the Rolleiflex 2.8

I shot a test roll of black and white film in my Rollei 2.8D last week. Test roll because the last time I shot a roll of film with this camera the results were sad indeed. Utter failure is a better description. I don’t know the cause, but only one exposure survived out of 12Continue reading “Shooting Square with the Rolleiflex 2.8”

Pistons on the Square – the Ides of March

The Ides of March is March 15 and marks the anniversary of the death of Julius Caesar at the hands of his friend Brutus in 44 BC. No such event this year as it was a gorgeous morning in Georgetown, Txas. I was out with my Nikon D850 and a single lens – the TamronContinue reading “Pistons on the Square – the Ides of March”

Expired Kodak Portra 160NC + Rolleicord Vb

I took some time last week to shoot a test roll of Kodak Portra 160 NC that expired in 2005. The film had been preserved in a frozen state for over 20 years but I wasn’t sure what I’d get. I set the meter on my iPhone for ISO 80 instead of 160. It isContinue reading “Expired Kodak Portra 160NC + Rolleicord Vb”

San Miguel de Allende & Pozos de Mineral, Mexico (2009/2010)

Sometimes I have a plan and sometimes the plan takes shape through the day. Today is one of those days where I start with one idea but as time passes, the plan changes. I am OK with that. I started the day today panning to import the photos from our recent Mexico trip onto/into theContinue reading “San Miguel de Allende & Pozos de Mineral, Mexico (2009/2010)”

Black, White & Fuji GSW 690

I don’t want to overstate this or put too many words in this post. Just a few examples of TMax 400 from my recent shoot with the new to me Fuji GSW 690. The camera is probably close to 30 years old, originally designed to take pictures of tourist groups in Japan. The stunning characteristicContinue reading “Black, White & Fuji GSW 690”

Exploring Watkins Glen: A Racing Weekend Adventure

It was a little over two years ago, in mid-September 2022, and we were at Watkins Glen, NY for the Sportscar Vintage Racing Association (SVRA) racing event weekend. It was a great experience! I was there to fulfill a dream that I had since childhood, after reading about the race track and the legends thatContinue reading “Exploring Watkins Glen: A Racing Weekend Adventure”

It’s All About the Light

Light or lack of light is the great equalizer for capturing great images with your camera. It doesn’t matter if you are shooting with a film camera, or a digital camera, the light is what enables the image. So, the other day when my wife Kathy wanted a picture of her with Phoenix (her horse)Continue reading “It’s All About the Light”

Pistons on the Square (Old Film Camera Pictures) November 16, 2024

I carried two cameras to Pistons on the Square two weeks ago. One was a Fuji medium format digital and the other was a 40+ year old Olympus 35mm SLR. This posting features pictures taken by the Olympus OM4 with the OM 50mm 1.4 lens from 1983.

Cartoberfest at Spare Birdie

There was an exotic car show (and others not as exotic) at Spare Birdie in Cedar park this morning. The weather at mid-70’s and sunny was as good as it gets in Texas in October. There were many beautiful cars and hundreds of people strolling the parking lots and enjoying the Cartoberfest (organized by JeffContinue reading “Cartoberfest at Spare Birdie”

Life in Pictures – Old Cars

When I was a teenager, car styles changed every year. There was almost always a distinct difference in both the body style, and the interior in American cars every year. I don’t think that Japanese or European cars had the same sweeping change year to year – but, back in the 1950’s there were notContinue reading “Life in Pictures – Old Cars”

A Life in Pictures

Originally I was going to start a series of posts that would have one picture a day. The picture would inspire a story that would talk about the why, what, where and when aspects of the photograph. I may still do that, but the title that summarizes the whole thing is “A Life in Pictures.”Continue reading “A Life in Pictures”

It’s a Beautiful Thing…

What exactly am I talking about here – “It’s a beautiful thing” could be about just about anything. It could be an act of kindness, an interaction between two or more people, a new car, a house, a picturesque landscape, a camera… and on and on. Well in this case it is kind of aboutContinue reading “It’s a Beautiful Thing…”

Totality – A Moment in Time and Space

We really didn’t expect to be as moved as we were. The hype started some time ago – it’s really hard to remember when the upcoming eclipse caught our attention, but it had to be over a year ago. Since we were in the middle of the path as it crossed Texas, it was promisingContinue reading “Totality – A Moment in Time and Space”

Vintage Cameras and Old Film – Chasing Better Pictures, Part 1

Recently, I had the good fortune to use two Rollei cameras from the mid-fifties; one was the Rolleiflex 2.8D with the Carl Zeiss Planar 80mm 2.8 lens, and the other is the little brother, a Rolleicord Vb, with the 75mm 3.5 Xenar lens. Here is a picture of the Rolleiflex 2.8D. The color pictures wereContinue reading “Vintage Cameras and Old Film – Chasing Better Pictures, Part 1”
